Gardeners Grahame Park Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Grahame Park is committed to maintaining high standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening activities. This policy sets out our approach to safe working practices, risk management and the continuous improvement of our health and safety performance.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment arising from our landscaping and gardening work. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice. Management is responsible for providing safe systems of work, appropriate supervision and the resources needed to implement this policy effectively.
All employees and contractors working on behalf of Gardeners Grahame Park are expected to take reasonable care of their own health and safety, and that of others, and to cooperate fully with the measures described in this policy.
Responsibilities and Management
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will ensure that:
Suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for gardening and maintenance tasks; appropriate control measures are implemented and reviewed; and equipment, tools and machinery used in gardens and outdoor spaces are maintained in safe working order.
Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation of safe working procedures on site. They must ensure staff are competent for the tasks they undertake, that work areas are organised safely and that any hazards are identified and addressed promptly.
Every employee has a duty to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly and report hazards, incidents or near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work at any property or outdoor space, a risk assessment will be carried out to identify potential hazards associated with gardening activities. This may include uneven ground, slopes, water features, traffic, overhead services, manual handling tasks, use of powered equipment, and the presence of members of the public or pets.
Control measures may include safe access routes, clear work zones, signage where appropriate, manual handling techniques, and the use of personal protective equipment. Where higher risk activities are identified, method statements or written safe systems of work will be prepared and communicated to all team members.
Risk assessments are reviewed regularly, particularly when there are changes to work methods, equipment or site conditions.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Grahame Park will provide suitable training and instruction so that employees can carry out their duties safely and confidently. This includes induction training, task-specific training for the use of gardening tools and machinery, and refresher training as needed.
Only trained and authorised staff will operate powered machinery such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters or similar equipment. Supervisors will monitor performance and provide additional guidance where required.
Where contractors or temporary workers are engaged, they will be required to demonstrate competence and to work in accordance with our health and safety standards.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means. This may include safety boots, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection where required.
Employees must use PPE as instructed, keep it in good condition and report any defects or loss so that replacement can be arranged. PPE is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safe systems of work.
Safe Use of Tools, Machinery and Substances
All gardening tools and machinery will be selected, used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Regular inspections will be undertaken to ensure that equipment remains safe and suitable for use in a range of garden settings.
Any defects will be reported immediately and the equipment taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced. Guards, safety switches and other protective devices must never be removed or bypassed.
Where we use horticultural products such as fertilisers, treatments or similar substances, we will store, handle and apply them safely and in line with product instructions. Relevant information will be made available to staff and appropriate protective measures will be implemented.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work can involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of injury, staff will receive guidance on correct manual handling techniques, use of lifting aids and safe team lifting where necessary.
Work will be planned to avoid unnecessary heavy lifting and to rotate tasks where possible, reducing repetitive strain. Staff are encouraged to report any discomfort or early signs of strain so that work can be reviewed and adjusted.
Public Safety and Site Management
Our teams take care to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and members of the public during gardening operations. Work areas will be kept as tidy as practicable, and tools or materials will not be left where they may cause trip hazards or unauthorised access.
Where there is a risk to others, such as during tree or hedge work, use of powered machinery or when working near shared paths and access routes, appropriate precautions will be taken. This may include temporary barriers, signage or scheduling work at quieter times.
Environmental Protection
Health and safety at Gardeners Grahame Park includes care for the environment. We aim to minimise pollution, manage green waste responsibly and avoid unnecessary use of hazardous products. Where practical, waste will be segregated, reused or recycled.
We will take reasonable steps to protect existing plants, wildlife and habitats while working, and we will follow any site-specific environmental requirements agreed with clients.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. Details will be recorded and investigated to identify causes and to implement measures that prevent recurrence.
First aid provisions appropriate to the type of work and location will be made available to staff. Emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of injury, fire, equipment failure or severe weather, will be communicated to the team.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This health and safety policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes in legislation, work activities or identified risks.
Feedback from employees and clients is encouraged to help improve our approach to safety. Gardeners Grahame Park is committed to developing a positive health and safety culture where safe working is an integral part of our gardening and landscaping services.
